There Are Some Guarantees …

“Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.” (Proverbs 27:1)

“Do you think I can be a professional ballplayer,” he asked.  Young in age, having hit his first homerun, driving in the winning run, saving the game behind the plate … he was just sure he was already a star in the making.  Yet, uncertainty established itself somewhere in his young heart and he needed some measure of reassurance.

Wouldn’t life be a whole lot different if there was such a thing as ‘guarantees’? We all know and understand to some degree at least the meaning of a guarantee.  One definition reads, “anything that assures a certain outcome” and we get it.

From a purely life-living-now perspective we understand:

  • Our dog will bark … not meow.
  • When it rains, even in west Texas, something will get wet and probably dirty!
  • If you stir up a beehive … you will probably get stung, maybe even multiple times.
  • If you were to strap on a pair of roller skates for most of us … we will fall down.
  • If someone near you is laughing … you will at least smile, if not giggle or start laughing with them.

Each of us has a past, a past filled with both good and bad choices, words and actions, successful and unsuccessful efforts, proud and embarrassing moments.  Found in our past are mistakes, sins, and a ‘missing of the mark’ from God’s perspective.

Each of us has a present that affords a window of opportunity to make something of ourselves, to please the Lord better than we did yesterday, and to encourage those around us.  It might be someone who is not our friend and perhaps even an enemy in a sense.  It might be someone in our own family who needs to be lifted up.  It might be a co-worker dealing with personal struggles that only they know about.  It might be a brother or sister in Christ that is just trying to keep their head above the waters of despair and doubt.

The world in which all of us are now living is so corrupt and can be overwhelming to the person striving to please God.  The world in which all of us are now living is so negative from so many viewpoints.  With all of these negative and destructive currents flowing all around us and our loved ones, we need to focus on the One who knows everything about us, the world in which we live, and what the future holds!

There is no guarantee of tomorrow or even of the rest of today; only the here and now as far as life and living are concerned.  And so we must learn to hold to the unchanging hand of God, a hand that reflects the love, grace, mercy and compassion we long for.

The only true guarantees in this life are the following:

  • This world will end (2 Peter 3:8-14)
  • Life will be over (Hebrews 9:27)
  • The Judgment will come (Matthew 25:31-36; 2 Corinthians 5:10; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10).

Of these events we can be sure, and then you and I will be ushered off into eternity … either to be with the Lord and His hosts in heaven … or to be with the devil and his followers in Hell!

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:7)
