A Mother’s Mark

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now I am sure, dwells in your as well.” (2 Timothy 1:5, ESV)

What encouraging words these must have been to the young Timothy, having already faced some of the many challenges confronting the person of God!

You see … Timothy had the blessing of a double set of well-directed steps to imitate … and what a rich heritage of fervent faith, hope, and practice he saw with his own eyes.

What makes a mother bear successful?  Strange question isn’t it?  Please read on.  Is it found in the number of mountains scaled … or the number of trees climbed … the number of beehives raided … or even the number of male bears she has attracted? No! No! No! No!

Her real success comes when she is able to take a small bear cub and train it for survival in the wilderness.

It is in the same way that a good mother who understands her role and the times she is living in is willing to make sacrifices and do all that is necessary …

  • To help her children know the God who loves them so much that He gave His Son to die on the Cross to save them.
  • And to learn His will and to instill within their hearts the necessary attitudes and goals so they can run the race of life in the way that pleases Him.
  • And not just survive, but thrive in the ungodly world around them!

If one is blessed with a good mother you know the value of her life … and if you were not I am so sorry that you were not able to experience God’s intended joy of that relationship.

But regardless … let us understand this truth … a mother’s mark is permanent!

The times we are living in are becoming more and more challenging every day!  Our children and grandchildren are being influenced in ways that are already proving to be detrimental to their lives … but more importantly … to their souls!

Our children need to be equipped to recognize truth from error … learn the value of making good choices … understand the only reliable roadmap to life, both now and for eternity is God’s Book.

Our children need to be able to see through the lies this world so often shares with them … they need to develop a world view that is based on Scripture rather than opinion, feelings, emotions …and learn how to think for themselves … and to acquire their own faith!

It has been said there’s no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one. Sometimes in our efforts to emphasize the significance of the mother, we can paint a picture that leaves many moms who are really trying to measure up feel simply overwhelmed, depressed, and even inadequate!

We want to encourage each one to become the best they can be. Mistakes are made, but the time to move ahead in the right direction is right now!

The role of a mother … a mom … to help lead, teach, and guide our young ones cannot be overlooked or viewed lightly!

Mothers and fathers are to be spiritual role models … who will demonstrate the reality of walking with God through both the sunny days and storms of our lives.  We have the awesome opportunity to be a lighted candle in a very dark world.

Do your children see authenticity and sincerity in your relationship with God?

Truths and facts can be deposited into our children’s heads … but they look to see genuine faith and love for the Lord modeled consistently in everyday life and living.

Talk truth … God’s truth … and then model truth … “walking in the light as He is in the light …” (1 John 1:5-9)

“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth” (3 John 1:4).
