Abraham known “as the father of the faithful”… and “the friend of God” was not a perfect man by any stretch of the imagination! He had his faults just like we do! We are all familiar with his story in Genesis and we clearly recognize the great faith he possessed in the Lord. All of these traits and many more that could be considered are certainly worthy of emulation and imitation. But there is one compliment that is given to Abraham by the Lord that surely stands out … especially for any man who has a family or hopes to have a family. Genesis 18:19 reads, “For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice …”
Gentlemen, can you imagine having Jehovah God give you this level of compliment? Well, the fact is, God expects each one of us to strive to attain this kind of family leadership in our homes and families! He expects us to demonstrate before the eyes and ears of those under our roof this same degree of leadership!
- Abraham provided the proper direction for the spiritual welfare of those under his tents!
- Abraham wasn’t some sort of tyrant who ruled with an iron fist that demanded the respect and obedience of his family!
- Abraham provided through his own consistent behavior what his family needed to see!
- Abraham did not provide a style of leadership that could be characterized as ‘do as I say … not as I do!’
My question … actually several questions … for those of us on the male gender side:
- How are we known by God?
- Are we actively … daily … providing godly direction for every member of our family?
- Are we living an example, like Abraham, that is consistent and worthy of emulation?
- Are we providing clear and attainable spiritual goals for all of our family?
Hard questions to be sure! Personal questions there is little doubt! Will we not only ask these questions of ourselves … may we answer them thoughtfully, carefully, honestly and prayerfully! May each of us as men of God make any necessary changes in order to be the very best leader in our home and family!
Gentlemen … YOU MAKE THE CALL!!!
