I’ve lived a good life! The Lord has blessed me beyond measure and so much more than I could have ever deserved! I’ve seen a great number of changes during this lifetime with many of those changes being good … others not-so-good … and still others bad! But the saddest changes witnessed by this writer have been the changes affecting the Lord’s people … in their manner of life … their way of living … their priorities … and their way of worship. And it is in each of these areas that the observation can be made: the authority of God’s Word is being softened and in some cases ignored … replaced by opinion, by what pleases a person, and by an elevation of self over God and His will!
The prophet Jeremiah writes, “Thus says the Lord: Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ’We will not walk in it.’ “
You see, the people of Jeremiah’s day had lost their way … they had wandered away from the “old paths” … and it didn’t happen overnight! One step at a time … a little change here … a little disregard there … and soon they were lost!
The following words seem most appropriate at this hour for those of us who claim to be counted among the Lord’s people:
“Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world, they resound with God’s own heart, oh let the ancient words impart! Words of life, words of hope, give us strength, help us cope in this world wherein we roam, ancient words will guide us home.”
“Holy Words of our faith handed down to this age, came to us through sacrifice, oh heed the faithful words of Christ! Ancient words ever true … changing me and changing you. We have come with open heart, oh let the ancient word impart!”
Dear reader … God’s Word doesn’t change … Period! Jesus says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (Matthew 24:35). It is people who change … for the better … or for the worse! Each of us must make the call! Bill
